Use and Advantages of Polyester Fibre Filling

Siliconized polyester fibre filling is a type of man-made batting created from synthetic fibres specially treated with a silicate material, which is the one that protects this filling from attracting all kinds of bacteria and dust.

There are different types of fibre fills according to their origin. Virgin fibre comes without intervention or blends, directly from the machine and posterior silicate treatment, while re-generated fibre fills come from the material left after processing the virgin fibre. Even if both have different densities and re-generated materials are more cost-effective, both types have the same properties and durability.

In addition to its antibacterial and cushioning properties, its production processes which do not involve the use of harsh chemicals, a continuous source of water and the exploitation of animal species, siliconized fibre is being preferred worldwide in the manufacture of pillows, mattresses, cushions, pads, quilted, childcare products and even furniture, playing a very important role in the home furnishing industry.

World fibre consumption has increased over several decades; from 1950 to 2008, the per capita consumption increased from 3.7 kg to 10.4 kg, and through continuous development, it recorded in 2014 a demand of 55.2 million tons (122 billion pounds) of synthetic fibres, in addition to the natural fibres, including cotton and wool, which have a demand of 25.4 million tons.

Due to their large surface area and ability to retain moisture, textiles are known as being conducive to microorganisms’ growth, such as bacteria and fungi, which can be found almost everywhere and are able to quickly multiply, depending on the moisture, nutrients and temperature levels. Some bacteria populations may double every 20–30 min under ideal conditions (36–40 °C, pH 5–9), meaning that one single bacteria cell can increase to 1,048,576 cells in just 7 hrs. The microorganism’s growth on textiles causes a range of undesirable effects, not only on the textile itself, but also on the user. These effects include the generation of unpleasant odour, reduction in mechanical strength, stains and discoloration and an increased likelihood of user contamination.

The fibre industry continues evolving and researching for new ways to chemically protect these materials from unwanted bacteria, making more easy-to-maintain products for the final customer.
